This Memorial Day weekend I traveled with friends to Baltimore, MD to attend Next 2009, a conference hosted by Sovereign Grace Ministries.
http://www.sovereigngraceministries.org/ I’d never attended this conference before, only heard good things about it from other friends who had attended in the past. The night before I had to do research to even learn the baiscs of who heads Sovereign Grace, what they are all about. I learned that Sovereign Grace is headed by C.J. Mahaney and is a product of C.J.’s church, Covenent Life Church in Maryland. C.J. is no longer the head pastor, Joshua Harris is (yes, the I Kissed Dating Goodbye Josh Harris). I knew of most of the pastors who would be speaking, but had never personally experienced any of their work – speaking or writing. In addition to not knowing much about the conference before I got there, I’d also never given much thought to visiting Baltimore – just hasn’t really been on my radar of ‘places to visit before I die.’
Going into this weekend so blindly, I was so delighted by the way it all played out. I liked the speakers even more than I thought I would. D.A. Carson, C.J. Mahaney – so, so smart, wise and gifted. Joshua Harris was a plesent surprise (since I only knew him as the dating guy) – he was the brain behind this whole conference and on top of that, delivered a great talk the first night. I couldn’t encourage you enough to spend some time listening to all the talks – you can download them here: http://www.thisisnext.org/resources/.
Baltimore itself was a surprise added bouns to the trip. We had a lot of free time to roam the city and I loved all the history that

Baltimore Orioles
seemed to live around every corner. The Chessepeake Bay, the site where the Star Spangled Banner was written, chetheadral style churches – all interesting. We even got the best introduction to Orioles baseball we could have asked for – a beautiful day, excellent seats, and they even won!
All in all – a totally worthwhile, much needed trip – even if it landed in the middle of the busiest month possible. I’m glad I fit it in.
